County Election Board

All the necessary steps in organizing and carrying out primary elections, and general elections come under the supervision of the county election board. Three members serve on the board and are appointed by the State Election Board. The county central committees representing the two largest political parties in the state submit lists of nominees to the State Election Board. A member and alternate are selected from each list to serve a four-year term. The two members are known as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman. A third member is appointed by the State Election Board as the county election board secretary for a four-year term. The secretary is the chief administrative officer for the county election board and may be reappointed by the State Election Board.

Official duties assigned to the county election board include:

  • Appointing members to the precinct election board. Precinct Election Board members are also called Precinct Officials, Inspector, Judge and Clerk.
  • Examining mail, nursing home and In-person absentee ballot affidavits for processing.
  • Oversee election night procedures which involve accepting the voting devices, supplies and ballots from inspectors.
  • Observing the tabulation of election results and turning custody of all sealed ballots over to the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Deputies.
  • Canvas and certify all election results.
